Stigma and Discrimination Against Mental Health

Savoy Koken

Monday 3 October 2022

Your feelings are valid.

Hello and thank you for tuning into my blog! My name is Savoy Koken and I am a twenty year old female (she/her) currently living in my hometown, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. I was born in New York City, but I have lived in the suburbs my entire life. Since middle school, I have faced many mental health issues, and the one thing I can say, is that mental health is so very real.

I decided to blog about discrimination against those who suffer from mental health and really go under the fundamentals of mental health illness. I truly believe everyone has a mental health issue whether they know it or not. There are so many different illnesses one can suffer from, and we think of some of them to be so ordinary to the point where we do not even know they are an illness. Mental health is more prominent than ever. Suicidal rates keep escalating, many struggle with body image, and the list goes on and on. So the question of the day is how can people not believe this is a real thing? I could blog about so many different things, but mental health deserves to be more recognized and taught about more than ever before.

By sticking around with my weekly posts, you will have the ability to learn more about mental health issues from a general and personal perspective. As I stated above, more and more people are developing these issues whether they are aware of it or not. I aspire to make sure you know how to address the issues you are facing and make those around you know that this is real.

Just A Few Mental Health Illnesses You Didn't Know Were Mental Health Illnesses ...

Anxiety Mood Swings Depression Bipolar Disorder Trauma Stress Phobias

Substance Abuse Addictive Disorder Body Dysmorphia Loneliness Panic Attacks

Common vs Uncommon

Out of the words above, some are expected to fit into the category, but many may be surprising. Before gaining knowledge on mental health; illnesses such as anxiety, mood swings, stress, phobias, and loneliness seemed pretty normal to me. I thought nothing of it. In my next post, you will learn more about why these certain issues fit in the category of mental health, so make sure to check back with me!
